Digital Photography Portfolio

I intended to take Photography to complete my VAPA credits, but I stayed for a much more profound reasons. At first glance, it seems like an easy class but photography really tested my creativity. There were so many aspects of photography that I learned that I really didn’t expect, from camera skills like shutter speed and light and shadow, to how subtle edits could impact a photo to the viewer’s eye. From this class I understood what it meant for photography to be art. The feeling of appreciating a good photo cannot be understated. It’s purely subjective, but there is still an underlying science of what looks good and what doesn’t, and Photo 1 helped me get a grasp on this principle.

In the next semester and the future I hope to learn more editing techniques, getting more comfortable with using the camera, since I often find myself hunting for certain buttons for long periods of time.

Elements of Art: Texture

Elements of Art: Texture photo

This photo was taken from the very first project, the Elements of Art. It is a photo of a tree which I thought had an interesting texture. However, I felt the original colors of the tree did not pair well with the much calmer shapes and patterns it had. For this reason, I made it significantly cooler, to make it overall feel very dreamy.

Composition technique : Rule of Odds

Composition technique : Rule of Odds photo

This photo demonstrates the rule of odds to some degree. There are five yellow petals. I believe this photo looks very eye-catching because the pink and yellow are more exotic colors, as opposed to green in the background. This photo came out better than I expected, since it was taken on an old IPhone. I think the worse quality made it look like a watercolor nature painting.

Photographic alphabet

The Photographic Alphabet assignment was the most time consuming for me. Since I had to find letters in plain sight, I had to expand my creativity. The main aspect this project helped me with was with cropping out unimportant details and rotating.

This project was from the Looking Up assignment. I have a tube light at home. I decided to make the photo slanted because so it would give a sense of speed, or zooming through, since light is the fastest thing in the world. I was debating whether or not to add vignette, but I decided to skip it since you could see some of the texture from the ceiling. photo

Unseen

Unseen photo

For this unseen project I decided to use the smoke detectors. After purposefully looking for things that go unseen, I learned that a lot of smoke detectors at Paly are detached to to the ceiling. For my edits I colored in the wires but I think I should have dimmed the background to make it stand out more.

Light and Shadow

During this project I went into the dark room and utilized a red light to create a shadow of the skull. I specifically used the red color because it is symbolic of death, which is similar to the theme of the skull. The edits I made on this photo were pretty insignificant - I just made the blacks darker to blend in the silhouette of the table with the surrounding darkness.

High Shutter Speed

High Shutter Speed photo

This shot was taken at the parking lot, of a rider doing a wheelie. Originally I wanted the bike rider to move parallel to the camera but I made the creative decision for him to ride towards me to create a sense of “almost falling” which the feeling you would get doing a wheelie. I think I would have liked for him to take of the lanyard for the photo.

Action Sequence

Action Sequence photo

My action sequence was just walking. I like the background of the photo, it creates a city-like view, especially with the palm trees. I think I could have spaced out the frames more or just simply added more frames since the objects are too narrow. In addition, there is a little bit of blur between the figures I think I should have been more careful with the editing.

Slow Shutter - Subject Blur

Slow Shutter - Subject Blur photo

I really liked this subject blur shot because it captures both the expression of the players and the movement of the shuttle. For this photo, I entered the big gym during a PE class and put my camera on the ledge of the stairs, which is why the background is so crisp. Furthermore, it is perfectly exposed. I think I should have had a more clear subject in the photo, there are a lot of things going on from the shuttle to the two players, but I guess that also captures the essence of badminton’s fast pace.

Slow Shutter - Panning

Getting a good panning shot was difficult because I had to find a balance between the speed of how fast I moved the camera as well as the shutter speed and aperture for a good exposure. I got lucky with the fire truck coming through and it brought vibrance into the frame.

Slow Shutter - Experimental

This is my experimental slow shutter shot. It was a way to communicate the everyday interactions between students. It was overexposed so I had to tone down the exposure significantly.
